Mass protests took place in Uzbekistan, several people were injured, but the government of Uzbekistan was forced to give in to the demands of the protesters.

In 1992, Karakalpakstan voluntarily became part of Uzbekistan. Karakalpakstan occupies 1/3 of the territory of Uzbekistan. Most of the mineral resources of Uzbekistan are concentrated in Karakalpakstan. The government of Uzbekistan has decided to amend the country’s Constitution, depriving Karakalpakstan of sovereignty.

In response, thousands of Karakalpakstanis took to the streets of their cities as protests.

As a result, amendments to the constitution of Uzbekistan relating to Karakalpakstan were cancelled.
