Roskomnadzor, censorship and imitation of stormy activity

Useless Roskomnadzor

Censorship on the Internet looks ridiculous, because there are always ways to bypass censorship locks, but censors are constantly trying to intervene.

Why are they doing that? In my opinion, censorship thus demonstrates its relevance and usefulness, imitates violent activity.

I came to this conclusion because of two letters from representatives of the Russian censorship.

A bit of background

When the English-language version of the DEADHOUSE project was created, it was decided that initially English-language content would not be available to users from Russia. And why, if for Russian-speaking users there is a Russian-language site DEADHOUSE.RU.

At first, we had a blocking at the CMS WordPress level, but after the police became interested in the project, we blocked the project at the DNS level and the site content is not supplied to Russia at all. The blocking is attributed to the Cloudflare service and it is rather difficult to make a claim against us.

Censors

Several days ago I received a couple of curious letters from Roskomnadzor with the following content:

Letter from Roskomnadzor

In these letters, Russian censors demand to restrict viewing of pages from the “Suicide” section in the English-language version of the site, since the content of this section contradicts Russian legislation.

This requirement caused me some bewilderment, because viewing of the DEADHOUSE.ORG website is blocked by us for users from Russia.

Thus, you can see the content of the DEADHOUSE.ORG website either outside the Russian Federation or using a VPN.

That is, Roskomnadzor employees specially connected a VPN to see the content of the DEADHOUSE.ORG website.

But that is not all. In January 2020, Roskomnadzor blocked the ProtonMail mail service on which our contact mailbox is located.

In fact, the situation there is even funnier. After a while, Russian censors removed the blocking from ProtonMail, but in general, this did not affect the performance of the ProtonMail server in any way – mail from this service is not delivered across Russia. The basis for the illegal blocking is a letter from the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation to the two largest providers Rostelecom and MTS. In addition, Mail.ru services and, possibly, some others, do not accept mail sent from ProtonMail mailboxes. Remember this when you send email to Russia.

Roskomnadzor, however, bypassed its own blocking of ProtonMail and sent an email to this mail service.

Conclusions

The situation looks like this: a Roskomnadzor employee monitors search queries related to prohibited content in Russia in English. Then he finds our email on a website blocked in Russia and writes a letter to the blocked mail service.

And all these efforts are absolutely pointless!

There can be only one conclusion from this: the Russian censorship imitates violent activity for the figures in the report. After all, they periodically publish reports on how much content they have blocked.

Absolutely useless people in a useless organization.

UPD: Unexpectedly, the story was continued. Roskomnadzor assures that the DEADHOUSE.ORG website is available in Russia. However, the blocking functionality will be attributed to the Cloudflare service, so let them deal with them.
