At the direction of President Trump, the US military killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, bound for Baghdad from the airport.
General Soleimani actively developed plans for an attack on American diplomats and military personnel in Iraq and throughout the region. General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition troops and the wounding of thousands of others.
Over the past few months, he has launched attacks on coalition bases in Iraq, including on 27 December, which resulted in the death and injury of American and Iraqi personnel. General Soleimani also approved the attacks on the US Embassy in Baghdad that occurred this week.
General Soleimani was killed by a point missile strike.
