New server and move from St. Petersburg to Moscow

Moving to Moscow

By 2013, in addition to DEADHOUSE, about 30 of my sites and about 50 more sites of my partners were hosted on my server purchased for personal funds.

By this time, the server ceased to suit us according to its characteristics, and is morally outdated.

It was decided to buy a new server, which was done at the end of 2013. At that time, I had a lot of personal problems and had no time for the server at all. The new server was hosted in the data center in the name of my partner. It was a big mistake on my part, but that’s a completely different story.

At the same time, my old server remained in St. Petersburg, and we installed the new one in the Moscow data center.

The new server cost about $ 2500, but now the concession looked like this. K. and I chipped in equal parts for the purchase, while A. remained to administer the server on a volunteer basis.

I had something like 50 sites, including DEADHOUSE and K. also had about 20 commercial projects. The rest belonged to different people to whom we provided hosting services for free.

With the new server, it was initially somehow not very smooth. Something was constantly buggy and falling off.

I went to St. Petersburg and brought the old server from there, and the new one was sent for repair. Everything turned out to be simple there. The power supply cover of the new server was causing a short circuit during installation. This misunderstanding was quickly eliminated, the new server was returned to the data center, and the old server is still lying around at my house.

Actually, the resources of the old server for DEADHOUSE would have been enough for me, perhaps, if any problems happen, I will move the site to it.

As far as server placement is concerned, this is not a big problem at the moment. Compare, hosting a 1U server in 2005-2007 cost about $ 300 per month, and now you can host a server 4 times cheaper.

In this case, however, you will have to work in the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation, which is not very good.

Be that as it may, there are always fallback options.
