In the city of Andijan in eastern Uzbekistan last week, clashes broke out between demonstrators and government forces.
Dozens of dead and more injured are reported. The bloody tragedy culminated in several weeks of protests against the trial of 23 young people accused of assisting Islamic extremists.
At the weekend, in another city in eastern Uzbekistan – Kara-Suu – the population seized government buildings and expelled officials from there.
