Massacre in Ingushetia. 1992

In 1992, an armed conflict broke out between Ingushetia and North Ossetia, during which the Ingush population living in the Prigorodny region of North Ossetia was forced to leave their homes.

The conflict was accompanied by mass massacres of the Ingush in the territory of North Ossetia, abductions, hostage-taking and rape.

The conflict is rooted in history. As a result of the Russian expansion of the 18-19th century to the North Caucasus, the Terek Cossacks began to populate the territory of the Prigorodny District of North Ossetia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Bolsheviks carried out purges among the Cossacks and this territory was settled by the Ingush, but the incorrect administrative division of the times of Joseph Stalin attributed this territory to North Ossetia.

Beginning in 1990, calls for the return of Ingush territory began in Ingushetia. Mass rallies took place in both Nazran and Vladikavkaz.

Gradually, the confrontation resulted in a series of mutual killings of Ossetians and Ingush in the Prigorodny region and grew into an open armed conflict with the use of military equipment and artillery.

The conflict was settled through negotiations and the introduction of Russian troops into the Prigorodny region of North Ossetia.
As a result of the conflict, more than 30,000 Ingush left North Ossetia, at least 600 people were killed on both sides, and about 240 people were missing.
