On February 23, 2006, the roof of the Basmanny Market collapsed in Moscow. The tragedy occurred at about 5.45 in the morning.
66 people died, almost all of them came from the republics of the Caucasus.
The Basmanny market was built in 1975 by the architect Nodar Kancheli.
In connection with the accident, a special investigation commission was appointed by the Moscow government. The commission did not find any specific perpetrators.
In February 2004, the roof of the Transvaal Park collapsed, and Nodar Kancheli was also the author of the architectural project.
