On February 23, 2006, the roof of the Basmanny Market collapsed in Moscow. The tragedy took place at about 5.45 am.
66 people were killed, 33 more were wounded, almost all of them came from the republics of the Caucasus. Among them were citizens of Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
A huge concrete roof with an area of about 3000 sq / m collapsed on the people there. Following this, a fire started in the building.
Soon, Emergencies Ministry services arrived at the site of the collapse. Due to the scale of the tragedy, construction equipment was used. The then Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and the head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry Sergei Shoigu arrived at the rescue site.
Rescue work was carried out around the clock.
In connection with the accident, a special commission of the Moscow government was appointed to investigate.
The next day, the director of the Basmanny market, Mark Mishiev, was detained, but was released soon after. the investigators found no fault in his actions.
The same charge was brought against the architect Nodar Kancheli, who designed the Basmanny market.
Nodar Kancheli was previously charged with causing death by negligence. In 2004, the roof of the Transvaalpark amusement park collapsed, killing 28 people. “Transvaalpark” was also built according to the project of Nodar Kancheli.
The main reason for the collapse of the roof is the breakage of one of the cables that anchored the roof of the building. The cable was corroded and the building itself had not undergone major renovations since 1975.
On the night of February 22-23, a heavy snowfall occurred in Moscow, which led to an increase in the weight of the structure.
Nodar Kancheli was acquitted by the investigation. In 2008, the investigation announced that there were no guilty parties for the collapse of the Basmanny market.
The case was repeatedly returned for further investigation, but it never came to court.
The perpetrators have not been found.
Nodar Kancheli died at the age of 77 in 2015.
