The bear attacked a group of American tourists in the Carpathian Mountains, killed a woman and wounded two others.
The tourists initially managed to drive away the animal, which approached their tent 120 kilometers from Bucharest, but then the bear returned and attacked.
The animal initially attacked the 26-year-old woman, but the others managed to distract him by throwing stones. The predator then switched to one of the men and bit him on the leg, then bit the 31-year-old woman to death. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
Despite the fact that almost half of the European population of brown bears lives in Romania, attacks on humans are rare.
The last case was three years ago, when two men died in a rabid bear attack.
