Trolls, scriptkids and twist of fate

Fat troll

Troll punishment

At one time, a simple BBS was installed on DEADHOUSE to communicate with users. In my opinion it was CGI-Factory. Not even in my opinion, but for sure it was a BBS CGI-Factory, simple as a crowbar and as reliable as a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

The primitive interface made it possible to quickly delete messages, but to block the user, you had to climb into the configuration settings, which did not cause much enthusiasm.

A fat troll has appeared on this BBS. This troll wrote nasty things to everyone and annoyed everyone. I banned him, he used a proxy as a troll and again wrote nasty things to everyone.

In the end, I got tired of it. I found the IP of this dolbaeb in the logs, then googled the email with which he registered on some hacker forum and established his real name. There was no surname, of course.

At that time in Russia, Internet providers were decentralized, each provider served a limited area, so it was not difficult to establish the approximate area of the troll’s habitat.

I ended up with the troll’s name, approximate age, and approximate range.
As I said, at the time I was working in a law firm. With the troll’s data, I went into the next office where the detective agency was located and asked my colleagues how they could help in resolving the issue of de-anonymizing this character.

The detectives worked professional and about 40 minutes later I found out that the guy’s name is Daniel, that he is 18 years old, he has a brother, mother, and he lives in Moscow and a landline telephone number is written to his address.

Then I picked up and called the number I found. The troll himself answered the phone. I introduced myself and told in a colorful way what would happen to him and what future life prospects he would have if he did not stop hooliganism on our BBS.

The general meaning of my speech can be summed up in one phrase from the Postal computer game: “I will come to your house and kill your dog.”

The troll got scared and I never saw his posts anymore.

But that is not all.
After about 2-3 weeks, this young moron wrote to me on a contact email and, using social engineering, tried to find out how I finally found him in real life.

Since the social engineer from this dude was like a bullet from shit, he did not find answers to his burning questions, but I laughed well at his letter, like my fellow detectives.

Twist of fate

As I already wrote, I personally received complaints about the DEADHOUSE website, but once there was a case when, because of one such complaint, I had to talk long and tediously not only with the hoster, but also with my home Internet provider.

One dude complained about spam. I was promoting with Xrumer at the time, so it is possible that the complaint was not unfounded.

Usually, with complaints of this kind, I simply replied that measures had been taken and put the problem hosts on the blacklist.

But here I had to conduct lengthy negotiations with providers and generally get distracted by trifles.
I didn’t like it, I got angry and decided to punish the complainant.

I knew the complainant’s email, he hid the IP address behind a proxy. The market for hacking email addresses in Russia is rich and diverse, so after a couple of days I was already digging into the complainant’s mail, which, by the way, was on mail.ru.

I learned a lot of interesting things from his mail. Firstly, this dude was the moderator of a large political forum, and secondly, he had several dozen sites, mainly of regional news in Russia.

More precisely govnosites, because he stupidly typed the news of the main news agencies and tried to make money on it.

The administrative email for registering these sites was, of course, the one I had access to.
Among other things, this dude was a political activist and National Bolshevik of the party of Eduard Limonov, now deceased, and in the mail server’s storage there was a scan of this complainant’s passport so that I could enjoy his portrait.

Revenge is a dish to be served cold.
I waited until Friday evening, when the site administrators disperse to drink beer, retrieved the password to the complainant’s site registrar panel and removed the delegation of all his domains.

Of course, one could come up with something more sophisticated, for example, redirect all of its sites to Pornhub or something similar, but I am not an extremist national Bolshevik, and it was just lazy, so it was enough only to remove the delegation of 15-20 sites.

The dude shit with bricks and began the procedure for restoring access to his email and the domain name registrar panel. Hope the dude really enjoyed it.

But I am a noble man, and I considered this all sufficient revenge. Also, by Monday morning, the dude had already regained control of his domains.

A couple of days later, I returned him access to mail on mail.ru, accompanying the letter with a recommendation not to meddle in other people’s business.

But again, this is not all.

As I learned from the dude’s passport, he lived in the same area where I worked for a law firm.

About a month after these events, I was returning from work by bus and saw a familiar face.
I have a very good memory for faces and I easily recognized the complainant.

I really wanted to go up to him and talk, but in life I am a very modest person, and I didn’t want to add burning oil to the unfortunate man’s already flaming anus.

However, by that time there were some problems with the project, but that’s a different story.
