On August 31, 2004, an explosion took place at the Rizhskaya metro station in Moscow. A suicide bomber, whose identity was never identified, detonated an explosive device with a capacity of 1 kg (2.2lb) in TNT equivalent in the metro lobby.

After the explosion, a fire broke out in the metro lobby.
As a result of the terrorist attack, 51 people were injured, 7 people died on the spot, 3 died from wounds in the hospital.

The remains of a man later named the organizer of the terrorist attack were found at the site of the explosion.

This man turned out to be Nikolai Kipkeev, a native of Ukraine who joined the ranks of Islamist terrorists.

According to the investigation, an unidentified female suicide bomber at about 20.15 on August 31, 2004 entered the lobby of the Rizhskaya metro station in order to carry out a terrorist attack on the metro train.
However, at the entrance to the metro, police officers carried out random searches.

Frightened by the arrest, the female suicide bomber detonated the charge in the lobby, and did not go down to the underground station. Together with her, the alleged organizer of the terrorist attack, Nikolai Kipkeev, died.

The terrorist Shamil Basayev and his group, which carried out a series of terrorist attacks in Russia, including the hostage-taking at the Beslan school, when 329 people were killed, most of whom were children, took responsibility for the explosion.
